Badii is set out on a journey in a car to find someone to do something. Enough suspense for a film to be interesting, isn't it?
** Spoiler Alert **
No matter how curious the plot makes you, I am sure your own reactions will make you more curious. Undoubtedly, the God of film-making knew the importance of giving space and time to viewers to be judgmental!
Badii, while looking for someone, passes through a construction area with laborers around, which makes one think that maybe he is looking for some helping hand for construction. Thoughtfully, no hint is given to you. Then, We see Badii insisting a man who becomes irritated by him giving one a thought that probably he is gay.
Beautifully, we see Badii as an outsider like all those people did with whom he had failed endeavors. Like us, they were judgmental about him without even knowing him. It's beautiful to see a man in confusion and trouble, making choices about the person who would bury him. Just like we form groups with like minded people, he was looking for a man who would be as alone as he is. He chose the tree which is just as lonely in the middle of nowhere.
He didn't want to listen to any more advises. He wanted not to talk about his problem as he knew that no one can feel what he is feeling at all. However, the Azeri taxidermist is a new turn in his journey. He tried everyone he thought would be good for the job (people like him) but as he realized he doesn't have choices, he grasped the Azeri.
So far, he was moving in his comfort zone - taking the route he knows, being in control of situation, etc. But, Azeri showed him a new route, that leads to town. His looks are of discomfort and this route is symbolic of other options available in life. Azeri's story of eating mulberries, probably inspired by the Zen story, was about awareness of the present. He always wandered in that area but he never saw that new road. He realized, perhaps, that he never has been aware of his present.
He looks around at things that he ignored till now and finds it different; not good, but different. This makes him rush to Azeri and make sure that he will come for him. He just wanted an assurance that his body will be covered with earth after he dies, but now he wants to be sure that he will be saved. Though, he never believed that he will die and that is why he never picked any strong person who wouldn't hesitate a minute to do the job.
He chooses to go to the grave he dug even after having the desire to live, probably because this will be his encounter with all his fears and the fear of past or maybe as a ritual that has to be completed and be saved or resurrection.
Beautiful long takes (without being artificial), amazing car tracking shots (rooted in the landscapes of Kazakh), and lots of close-ups. This is a pure cinema which is true art and can only be shown in the form it has been shown. It can't be a story, it can't be a song, it can only be the film it is!
A film that matters the most!
